The itineraries are here to help you get started with tips on where to stay, what to see, where to eat and the best time of year to travel. However the best part of these itineraries is that you can chop them up, stop where you like, take as long as you want. There are no restrictions, if some parts sound more interesting than others, feel free to skip stuff, add stuff or just explore off the beaten path where it suits, there’s really no limit to the fun you can have exploring the beautiful hinterland and diverse landscapes of South East Queensland.

Make sure you swing by Cunningham’s Crest Lookout, with a vista spanning all the way back to Brisbane, marking the point where intrepid explorer Cunningham first crossed the ranges.

Maybe take the back road and swing by Flagstone Creek via Stockyard to enjoy mountain views and the delights of hidden country cellar doors.

Take a Scenic Rim tour through the ancient giant shield volcanoes to the south-west of Brisbane. There are charming country townships and rolling hills to explore. It’s one of the most species-rich areas in Queensland and there’s plenty of accommodation ranging from back to basics camping to bed and breakfasts, backpackers, guest houses, eco-lodges, farm stays, luxury resorts and of course, budget motels.

Australia’s Green Cauldron is a forest covered mountain range and one of the best-preserved caldera’s in the world. It features scenic beaches, rainforest walks and is readily accessible for a natural getaway. Mt Warning is a popular sport and is famous for being the first part of Australia to see the sun each morning, getting it just before Cape Byron which is the most eastern part of our coastline - a great photo opportunity.

Rainforest Way is a fantastic way to explore the border regions between Queensland and New South Wales. Visit Binna Burra, O’Reilly’s or Tamborine mountain. There’s also the Border Ranges National Park and the trail on Lions Road.

You can really take your pick, there are great day trips or longer adventures, there’s so much to see and do in this fantastic region.

You’ll want some essentials while travelling, always carry water and spare fuel and some food for an impromptu picnic. You never know what kind of place you’ll discover while driving around. Just be open minded, one of the best things about travelling around on Australian Roads is the fantastic signage.

Look out for rustic looking green signs that point off on dusty tracks up mountainsides or into bushland, they probably lead to a spectacular lookout or hidden waterfall.
